The formula covers what most people want: a swim and snorkel stop along the lava coast, a paddleboard, a Sicilian appetizer of home-made bread, local cheese, preserved vegetables and pistachio specialties with sparkling wine, and a close pass by the Faraglioni and the old lookout towers on the way back.

For swimming at a slow pace: the small-group Faraglioni boat excursion has no fixed itinerary. The skipper picks the calmest coves on the day, including some that are hard to reach by land. It’s rated 5.0 from 29 guests.

For the boat to yourselves: the private charter to the Cyclops Islands adds swimming inside the sea caves locals call Ulysses’ Sea, a Sicilian lunch, and pickup from Catania or Taormina. It’s rated 4.8 from 70 reviews and costs around $172 per person.
