Cyclops Coast Cruises from Catania

If you’re staying in Catania, or arriving by plane or cruise ship, a Catania departure is the simplest way onto the Cyclops Coast. You meet at the old port a few minutes from the cathedral, board a sailing yacht, and spend four hours on the water with a swim stop and food on board, without first making your own way up the coast.

Why Catania Is the Easier Starting Point

Catania’s old port sits on Via Cardinale Dusmet, on the edge of the historic centre, so most hotels are a short walk or taxi ride away. The alternative, a direct Aci Trezza departure, means first travelling about 10 km up the coast, by AMTS bus 534, taxi or car. The Two Catania Cruises Compared

Both leading Catania departures are four-hour trips on sailing yachts, with a swim and snorkel stop, a stand-up paddleboard and food or drink on board. Between them they have more than 1,880 reviews, both averaging 4.7. The differences are in the details.

The Cyclops Coast Cruise with Appetizer & Snorkeling ($75) meets at the Vecchia Dogana, sails on a Bavaria 46 or Dufour 41 with at most 12 guests, and runs twice a day: 09:00 to 13:00 and 14:30 to 18:30. The food is the more generous of the two: home-made bread, local cheese, vegetables preserved in oil and Sicilian pistachio specialties, with a glass of Sicilian sparkling wine. Boarding fee: €15 per person.

The Sail Tour with Sicilian Aperitif ($50) meets at Caffè del Porto and boards from the Club Nautico dock inside the Dogana gate. It uses a Beneteau Sense 55, Dufour 41 or Oceanis 39 depending on group size, and includes a naturalist guide. The food is lighter: cheese, tomatoes, cold cuts and savoury pestos on bread with Italian sparkling wine. Boarding fee: €20 per person, and it isn’t suitable for children under five.

What You See on the Way

Leaving Catania, the boat heads north along a shoreline built almost entirely of black lava, the edge of old Etna flows that ran into the sea. On a clear day the volcano itself stands behind the city, often with a plume drifting from the summit.

The first landmark is the castle at Aci Castello, a Norman fortress built in 1076 from black lava stone on a volcanic crag above the water. From the sea you see how it sits on its rock, which you don’t get from the street. Beyond it lies Aci Trezza, with the Faraglioni dei Ciclopi and Isola Lachea rising from the bay: the rocks that, according to local tradition, the blinded Cyclops Polyphemus hurled after Odysseus’s ship.

Along the way you’ll pass the coastal lookout towers built from the same volcanic rock, and stop to swim somewhere sheltered along the lava coast. On the way back you’ll have time on deck with the food, with the whole bay behind you.

The Swim Stop

Both cruises stop long enough for a proper swim rather than a quick dip. Snorkel gear and a paddleboard are included. The water over the lava seabed is very clear, though it’s the Mediterranean, not a coral reef: expect rocks, seagrass and fish rather than bright colour everywhere. One guest who otherwise loved the appetizer cruise said they had “hoped a little bit of more fishes at snorkeling,” which sets expectations fairly.

The exact spot is chosen on the day. Much of the sea around the Faraglioni is a marine reserve with strict rules on where boats can stop and people can swim, and skippers also choose shelter from the wind.

What Guests Say

Reviews of both Catania cruises focus on the crews and the atmosphere rather than on any single sight. “The excursion was great fun and Giacchino (skipper) and Sofia were excellent hosts,” one guest wrote of the appetizer cruise. Another called it “one of the highlights of our holiday” and praised a guide who “told us lots of interesting stories.” On the sailing tour, one reviewer summed it up as “the most you could do in 4 hours.”

The honest caveat on the sailing tour comes from a guest who went out on a grey day with a front coming in: the crew couldn’t raise the mainsail, but the guide’s stories of “ancient myths intertwined with stories of natural events” still made the trip.

Practical Tips

• Morning or afternoon? In July and August the 09:00 departure is cooler and leaves your afternoon free. The 14:30 departure gets warmer water and softer light on the way home.
• Bring cash for the boarding fee. It’s paid at the dock and isn’t part of the online price.
• Bring swimwear, a towel, sunscreen, sunglasses and a change of clothes. The sailing tour also asks you to bring water.
• Mobility: boarding a sailing yacht involves a step down, and neither cruise is suitable for wheelchair users or people with limited mobility.
• Cruise passengers: the port is close to the cruise terminal area, but leave plenty of time and check your ship’s all-aboard time against the 13:00 or 18:30 return.

Make a Day of It

A morning cruise pairs well with an afternoon in Catania’s historic centre: the Piazza del Duomo is a short walk from the port, and the fish market nearby is busiest in the morning.
