Cyclops Coast Cruises with Aperitif

Plenty of boat tours advertise an “aperitif” that turns out to be a single glass of prosecco. On the Cyclops Coast the appetizer cruise serves a proper Sicilian spread on deck, and it’s a real part of why the tour has more than 960 reviews at an average of 4.7.

The Tour

The Cyclops Coast Cruise with Appetizer & Snorkeling is a four-hour sail from Catania’s old port, starting at $78. You board at the Vecchia Dogana on Via Cardinale Dusmet, on a Bavaria 46 or Dufour 41 sailing yacht with at most 12 guests. There are two departures a day, 09:00 to 13:00 and 14:30 to 18:30.

The boat heads north along Catania’s black lava coastline and stops for a first swim, with snorkel gear and a stand-up paddleboard on board. Then the food comes out as you continue toward Aci Trezza, passing the old lookout towers built from volcanic rock and the Faraglioni dei Ciclopi, with Etna behind the coast, before heading back to Catania.

What’s Actually Served

The appetizer is built around Sicilian produce:

Pistachios are a point of pride in this corner of Sicily. The town of Bronte, on the western slopes of Etna, grows some of Italy’s most celebrated pistachios, and you’ll find them in everything from pesto to pastries around Catania. Guests describe the aperitif as “very good,” and one summed up the rhythm of the day: “We also had some time for a swim, followed by prosecco, cold meats and cheese.” The exact items vary with what’s in season, so treat the list as a guide rather than a menu.

Why the Order Works

The swim comes first and the food second. That means you’re not eating a full spread right before jumping in, and once the active part of the trip is over you can sit back on deck with a glass while the coast slides past. It’s a good way to spend an afternoon.

Morning or Afternoon Aperitif?

Both departures include the same food. The morning cruise returns at 13:00, so the appetizer works as an early lunch and leaves the afternoon free for Catania. The afternoon cruise returns at 18:30, when a glass of wine on deck feels more like a proper aperitivo, and the late light over the coast is softer. In July and August, the morning is the cooler, more comfortable option.

Aperitif Cruise or Sunset Cruise?

They sound like the same trip, and on this coast they mostly aren’t. A sunset cruise is built around the timing and the evening light; an aperitif cruise is built around the food, the drinks and time on deck. The afternoon aperitif cruise is back in Catania at 18:30, before sunset for most of the season: the sun sets around 20:20 at Aci Trezza in June and July, and about 19:10 in mid-September. Only in October does sunset fall before the boat is back, at around 18:25 by mid-month.

If the evening light is what you’re after, the sunset boat tour to Aci Trezza is the one to book. It runs for two hours in a small group from the Aci Castello seafront, includes a swim at sunset, and is rated 4.9 from more than 100 reviews, from $57. How It Compares With the Other Food-Focused Tours

If the food is the main reason you’re booking, this cruise has the fullest shared spread. The sailing tour is cheaper and adds a guide, with lighter food. The private tour and the fishing day serve a genuine meal.

How Long Should an Aperitif Cruise Be?

Around two hours is enough for a short sunset trip with a drink. Three hours is a good balance. Sailing Boat or Motorboat?

Best Months

June to September is the best time for an aperitif cruise, with warm water for the swim before the food (around 23°C in June and 25 to 26°C from July to September). October can still work well on a fine day, with the sea still around 23°C early in the month, but the evenings on deck feel cooler. What to Wear

Light clothing, swimwear under it if you plan to swim, a towel, sunglasses and a light layer for the afternoon sail back. Wear flat shoes with grippy soles: you’ll be stepping down onto a sailing yacht.

Is an Aperitif Cruise Worth Paying More For?

It can be, if the extra money buys a smaller group, real food, drinks and a longer trip. Check what “aperitif included” means on each listing.
