What 'Sicilian Aperitif' Actually Means on This Cruise
It's a real regional spread, not a branded add-on.
Plenty of boat tours advertise an “aperitif” that turns out to be a single glass of prosecco. On the Cyclops Coast the most-booked cruise serves a proper Sicilian spread on deck, and it’s a real part of why the tour has 946 reviews at an average of 4.7.
The Tour
The Cyclops Coast Cruise with Appetizer & Snorkeling is a four-hour sail from Catania’s old port, starting at $75. You board at the Vecchia Dogana on Via Cardinale Dusmet, on a Bavaria 46 or Dufour 41 sailing yacht with at most 12 guests. There are two departures a day, 09:00 to 13:00 and 14:30 to 18:30.
The boat heads north along Catania’s black lava coastline and stops for a first swim, with snorkel gear and a stand-up paddleboard on board. Then the food comes out as you continue toward Aci Trezza, passing the old lookout towers built from volcanic rock and the Faraglioni dei Ciclopi, with Etna behind the coast, before heading back to Catania.
What’s Actually Served
The appetizer is built around Sicilian produce:
- home-made bread
- local cheese
- vegetables preserved in oil, the kind of sott’olio found in every Sicilian pantry
- Sicilian pistachio specialties
- a glass of Sicilian sparkling wine
Pistachios are a point of pride in this corner of Sicily. The town of Bronte, on the western slopes of Etna, grows some of Italy’s most celebrated pistachios, and you’ll find them in everything from pesto to pastries around Catania. Guests describe the aperitif as “very good,” and one summed up the rhythm of the day: “We also had some time for a swim, followed by prosecco, cold meats and cheese.” The exact items vary with what’s in season, so treat the list as a guide rather than a menu.
Why the Order Works
The swim comes first and the food second. That means you’re not eating a full spread right before jumping in, and once the active part of the trip is over you can sit back on deck with a glass while the coast slides past. It’s a good way to spend an afternoon.
Morning or Afternoon Aperitif?
Both departures include the same food. The morning cruise returns at 13:00, so the appetizer works as an early lunch and leaves the afternoon free for Catania. The afternoon cruise returns at 18:30, when a glass of wine on deck feels more like a proper aperitivo, and the late light over the coast is softer. In July and August, the morning is the cooler, more comfortable option.
How It Compares With the Other Food-Focused Tours
| Food served | From | Length | Boat | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cyclops Coast Cruise with Appetizer | Bread, cheese, preserved vegetables, pistachio specialties, sparkling wine | $75 + €15 fee | 4 h | Sailing yacht, max 12 |
| Sail Tour with Sicilian Aperitif | Flavoured cheese, tomatoes, cold cuts, bread with pestos, sparkling wine | $50 + €20 fee | 4 h | Sailing yacht, naturalist guide |
| Private tour with lunch | Small Sicilian lunch, dessert, Italian coffee | $172 | 3 h | Private fishing boat |
| Fishing-tourism day | Welcome aperitif, seafood tasting prepared on board, wine | $136 | 5.5 h | 20 m wooden fishing boat |
If the food is the main reason you’re booking, this cruise has the fullest shared spread. The sailing tour is cheaper and adds a guide, with lighter food. The private tour and the fishing day serve a genuine meal.
What Guests Say
The crew get as much praise as the food. “Captain Nanni and guide Carlotta were very kind and attentive, making sure we had everything we needed. Very good aperitif,” one guest wrote. Another called the trip “one of the highlights of our holiday.” One reviewer noted “modern boat and good equipment,” and added honestly that they’d hoped to see more fish while snorkeling, which is fair: the water is clear, but it’s the Mediterranean, not a tropical reef.
Know Before You Book
- Boarding fee: €15 per person, paid at the dock and not included in the online price.
- Not included: hotel pickup and drop-off.
- Bring: swimwear, a towel and sunscreen.
- Dietary needs: the standard spread includes cheese and may include cured meats; if you’re vegetarian, vegan or have allergies, contact the operator before you travel.
- Accessibility: not suitable for people with limited mobility, since boarding a sailing yacht involves a step down.
- Weather: the captain can change the itinerary for sea and weather conditions, and has the final say on safety.
Not Staying in Catania?
If you’re based in Aci Trezza, you can still get a glass of something on the water. The Aci Trezza Odyssey tour offers a complimentary glass of Sicilian almond wine or limoncello on its short trip past the Faraglioni. Or head out on a short tour and have your aperitivo on the Aci Trezza seafront afterwards, looking at the same rocks from a café table.
