Cyclops Coast Snorkeling Tours

Almost every boat tour on this coast includes a swim stop, but most treat it as one item on a sightseeing route. If getting in the water is the point of your trip, pick a tour built around it. The Cyclops Coast has two good ones, and the reason to snorkel here at all is underneath the boat.

What’s Under the Water

The sea around the Faraglioni and Isola Lachea is the Isole Ciclopi Marine Protected Area, 623 hectares between Capo Mulini and Punta Aguzza. It protects a seabed shaped by the same volcanic activity you can see above the surface. Underwater you’ll find lava beds, basalt columns continuing below the waterline, small caves, and pillow lava: the rounded, bulging shapes lava forms when it erupts underwater. Around Etna, these underwater volcanic formations are only found here, between Aci Castello, Aci Trezza and Ficarazzi.

Growing over much of it are meadows of Posidonia oceanica, the Mediterranean seagrass that shelters young fish and keeps the water clear. The reserve is also known for its variety of algae, several hundred species, and for sitting where marine life from the Tyrrhenian and Ionian seas meets. What you’re likely to see: shoals of small silvery fish over the seagrass, wrasse and bream around the rocks, sea urchins in the crevices, and on a lucky day an octopus tucked into a hole in the lava.

A fair warning from one happy guest on a Catania cruise, who “hoped a little bit of more fishes at snorkeling”: this is clear Mediterranean water over dark volcanic rock, not a tropical coral reef. The appeal is the landscape as much as the fish.

Option 1: The Small-Group Excursion With No Fixed Route

The tour featured on this page is the boat excursion to Aci Trezza with the Faraglioni and snorkeling, rated 5.0 from 29 reviews and starting at $57. It meets on Via Lungomare dei Ciclopi and runs as a relaxed small-group trip of about two hours with no rigid itinerary. The skipper, Massimo, chooses swim stops on the day according to the sea, favouring coves that are hard to reach from land.

On board there’s a paddleboard, water accessories, life jackets, shade, and fresh drinks and fruit offered during the trip. If having your own mask matters to you, ask the operator when booking or bring one. Guests describe it as calm and personal: “the water is stunning and our family loved the swimming and paddle boarding spot he chose for us.” Two guests mention the skipper used a translation app to explain things in English, which worked well but is worth knowing if you want a detailed commentary.

Best for: families and relaxed swimmers who want plenty of water time and a slow pace.

Option 2: The Guided Snorkeling Tour

The guided snorkeling tour in the Isole Ciclopi Marine Area, from $55, is the more focused choice. It’s run by DNA Divers Catania, lasts about 90 minutes, and begins with a briefing from a marine biologist before a guide leads you around the Faraglioni and Isola Lachea on the surface. Mask and snorkel are included, and you meet at a beach club on Via Lungomare dei Ciclopi with toilets and showers on site.

The route covers lava seabeds, submerged caves, basalt columns, pillow lava formations and Posidonia meadows. It isn’t suitable for children under 12 or pregnant women. It’s newly listed, so it has no reviews yet.

Best for: adults who want to understand what they’re looking at, and confident swimmers who want a guide in the water with them.

Option 3: Snorkeling as Part of a Longer Trip

If you’d like snorkeling plus a proper boat trip, several tours include masks and a stop inside the reserve:

• The 3-hour tour to Acireale, from $52, makes two swim-and-snorkel stops, including Capomulini Bay over black basalt, with masks and snorkels on board.
• The 45-minute tour to Aci Castello, from $17, includes a quick snorkel stop, masks and life jackets.
• The Catania half-day cruises include snorkel gear and a paddleboard on a four-hour sail with food.

Why Your Swim Spot Moves

In the marine reserve’s strictest zone, around Isola Lachea and the largest stack and marked by yellow buoys, boats can’t anchor or moor, and swimming is only allowed close to the western side of Lachea and around Punta Cornera. In the surrounding zone, anchoring is also banned and boats hold position or use designated moorings. Add the day’s wind and sea, and the best legal spot changes daily. A good skipper picking a different cove from the one in the photos is doing the job properly.

Snorkeling Tips for This Coast

• Bring biodegradable sunscreen. You’re swimming in a protected area.
• Don’t touch or stand on the seabed. Urchins are common on the rocks, and the Posidonia is protected.
• Bring a rash vest if you burn easily. Floating face-down in the midday sun is how people get caught out.
• Weak swimmers: ask for a life jacket or a float. You can still see a surprising amount from the surface.
