At 4.9 from 102 reviews, this small evening cruise has the highest rating of any reviewed boat tour on the Cyclops Coast, above both big Catania half-day cruises. It’s also the tour guests most often mention dolphins on.

What the Evening Format Changes

This is a two-hour trip, not a half-day cruise, built around the evening rather than a checklist of stops. You meet the captain on Via Lungomare dei Ciclopi, the seafront road between Aci Castello and Aci Trezza, and head out among the lava sea stacks as the light starts to change. Groups are small, the pace is slow, and the boat spends much of the time drifting.

The trip includes the Faraglioni dei Ciclopi and views of Etna, the chance to swim at sunset, and a stand-up paddleboard. There’s no bar on board, though guests mention being offered juice, watermelon and biscuits.

Which Way the Sun Actually Sets

It helps to know the geography. The Cyclops Coast faces east over the Ionian Sea, so the sun doesn’t set into the water here. It goes down inland, behind the villages and toward Etna.

That makes for a different kind of sunset, and many people prefer it. From the boat you’re looking back at the shore: the lava cliffs and the houses of Aci Trezza turn gold, then pink, Etna darkens against the sky, and the sea around the Faraglioni picks up the colour. The dramatic photos of the stacks as black shapes against an orange sky are usually taken from the shore looking out to sea, at dawn.

Approximate sunset times at Aci Trezza: about 20:20 in late June and July, 19:55 in mid-August, 19:10 in mid-September and 18:25 in mid-October. Departure times move with the season, so check the booking calendar for your date.

Do You Actually See Dolphins?

Often, on this particular tour. The Gulf of Catania is home to several dolphin species. Bottlenose and striped dolphins are seen most frequently, and common and Risso’s dolphins are recorded too. Reviews of this tour come back to the same thing: captain Massimo’s knack for finding them.

“With his eagle eyes for spotting dolphins, we managed to see several, plus a magnificent sunset,” one guest wrote. Another said Massimo “managed to find dolphins despite conditions were difficult,” and a family wrote: “we saw lots of dolphins! Never so many in the wild like this!”

Still, no one can promise wildlife on a given evening, and some trips won’t see any. Treat the sunset and the Faraglioni as the reason to go, and dolphins as a very welcome possibility. Is Evening Better Than a Daytime Cruise?

It depends what you want.

The daytime Cyclops Coast Cruise with Appetizer gives you more time on the water, a proper spread of Sicilian food and a longer snorkel. The sunset tour gives you softer light, a smaller group and the best odds of dolphins. Many visitors do both on different days.

The Best Months for a Sunset Cruise

June and early July have the longest evenings, and late June also brings Aci Trezza’s festival of San Giovanni Battista on 23 and 24 June. August has the warmest water for a sunset swim, around 26°C, but also the busiest harbour. Tips for the Evening

• Bring a layer. Even in summer, the breeze on the water after sunset can feel cool, especially if you’ve been swimming.
• Pack swimwear and a towel if you want to swim.
• For photos, shoot back toward the coast and Etna as the light turns warm, and keep watching the water for fins.
• Have dinner after. You’re back on the Aci Castello–Aci Trezza seafront just as the restaurants are filling up.

Other Evening Options
