Booking a Cyclops Coast Boat Tour: 12 Things to Check

Booking a Cyclops Coast boat tour? Check the departure point, route, duration, group size, swim stops, snorkeling, food and cancellation terms before you choose.

Updated October 2026

Cyclops Coast boat tours look remarkably alike when you first compare them, and two listings with almost the same title can be very different trips. One sails for four hours from Catania with a Sicilian aperitif on board; another is a 45-minute loop from Aci Trezza with a quick swim. Before you book a Cyclops Coast boat tour, check these 12 things.

1. Exact Departure Point

Tours start from three places, and the listing’s city name doesn’t always tell you which. Several tours listed under “Catania” leave from somewhere else.

Catania is the easier start if you’re staying in the city. Aci Trezza puts you minutes from the Faraglioni, so it’s the more efficient choice for a short trip focused on the sea stacks. Our Catania vs Aci Trezza guide compares the two in detail. Whichever you pick, check the meeting point on your voucher, not just the town.

2. Does the Tour Visit the Faraglioni?

For a first visit, look for an itinerary that names Aci Trezza, the Faraglioni dei Ciclopi, the Cyclops Islands, the Isole Ciclopi or Isola Lachea. Listings use all of these names, and some just say “sea stacks”. These are the reason most people book, and the waters around them are a marine protected area. A tour that only cruises Catania’s waterfront or heads somewhere else up the coast is a different trip.

3. Does It Include Aci Castello?

Longer trips from Catania usually do, because the boat passes the Norman castle on its black lava rock on the way north. For a first visit, seeing both Aci Castello and Aci Trezza gives you a fuller picture of the coast. The Aci Trezza Odyssey Faraglioni tour, from $22 and rated 4.0 from 19 reviews, fits Aci Castello in even on a short trip.

4. Duration

  • Two hours suits a short sightseeing trip from Aci Trezza.
  • Three hours is a good all-round balance of sights and swimming.
  • Four hours is the length for Catania departures, sailing and snorkeling.

A full day only makes sense if you want long swims and lunch on board. Our boat tour duration guide compares every length, half day and full day included.

5. Boat Type

Motorboats are quick and get you between the sights fastest. Sailboats are slower and more relaxed, and both four-hour Catania cruises use sailing yachts: the Cyclops Coast Cruise with Appetizer & Snorkeling sails on a Bavaria 46 or a Dufour 41. Catamarans and larger yachts generally give you more deck space and a steadier ride. Two tours here use working boats: the private tour goes out on a traditional Aci Trezza fishing boat, and the fishing-tourism day on a 20-metre wooden one. Our sailing tours page covers the sailing options.

6. Maximum Group Size

“Small group” has no fixed definition, so look for the actual passenger number. Some listings give one: the appetizer cruise takes up to 12 guests, and the full-day boat trip with lunch no more than nine. Others only say “small group”, and then it’s a question for the operator. Our small-group tours guide compares them.

7. What Does “Swimming Included” Mean?

Check how many swim stops there are, roughly how long each one lasts, how you get back on board, and whether the swim depends on the sea that day. The appetizer cruise makes one swim and snorkel stop. The 3-hour tour to Acireale, from $52 and rated 4.3 from 10 reviews, makes two. Few listings mention a ladder, so ask if it matters to you. The captain decides on the day: the appetizer cruise’s terms say the itinerary can change with the weather and sea conditions, and that the captain’s decision is final. Our boat tours with swimming guide goes through the stops tour by tour.

8. Is It Really a Snorkeling Tour?

A sightseeing boat with one quick swim is not the same as a snorkeling-focused excursion. The Faraglioni boat excursion, from $57 and rated 5.0 from 32 reviews, has no fixed swim stops: the skipper picks coves for the day’s conditions. Check the gear too. Both four-hour Catania cruises include snorkeling gear, while the Faraglioni excursion lists “water accessories” and a paddleboard, so ask about masks. See our Cyclops Coast snorkeling tours page.

9. Food and Drinks

“Aperitif”, “refreshments”, “local products” and “lunch” can mean very different things, so read the details. The appetizer cruise serves homemade bread, local cheese, vegetables in oil and pistachio specialities with Sicilian sparkling wine. The Faraglioni excursion offers chilled drinks and fruit. The sunset boat tour has no bar on board, although complimentary drinks may be offered. A full lunch comes only on the longer trips, which our boat tours with lunch guide compares.

10. Per Person or Per Boat?

This matters most for private tours. Work out the cost for your whole group before you compare. The private boat tour with lunch is priced per person, around $172 each, so a group of four pays about $688 and the price doesn’t fall as the group grows. The same four on the appetizer cruise pay about $312, plus a €15 boarding fee each at the dock.

11. What Does the Private Price Include?

Confirm fuel, the skipper, drinks, food, snorkeling equipment and any harbour fees. The private tour’s listing includes the fuel, the boat driver, a guide, lunch, a Sicilian dessert and coffee, with pickup from Catania or Taormina as an option. Snorkeling gear isn’t on its list, so ask. On the shared Catania trips the fees are the surprise: the appetizer cruise and the full-day sail each add €15 per person, and the Catania sail tour with Sicilian aperitif €20, paid on the day. Our cruise prices guide adds up the totals.

12. Weather and Cancellation Policy

Wind and waves can change the route, cut a swim stop or keep the boat in harbour. Every tour on this site offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure, which is most valuable outside peak summer, when a windy forecast is more likely. If you can, book early in your stay so a cancelled trip can move to another day. Our best time for a Cyclops Coast cruise guide covers the season.

Shared or Private?

A shared tour is usually the better choice for one or two people. Private becomes more attractive for families and groups who want their own pace and the sea caves to themselves. Our private vs shared guide works through the costs.

Daytime or Sunset?

Choose daytime for swimming, snorkeling and clear views of the coast. Choose sunset for the atmosphere, for couples and for an aperitif on the water: the two-hour sunset boat tour, from $57, is rated 4.9 from more than 100 reviews. Our sunset vs daytime guide compares the two.

Best Tour for First-Time Visitors

A strong all-round choice is three to four hours, a small group, Aci Castello, Aci Trezza, the Faraglioni and a swim. The Cyclops Coast Cruise with Appetizer & Snorkeling covers all of it: four hours from Catania’s old port, up to 12 guests, a swim and snorkel stop, and a Sicilian aperitif, from $78 plus the €15 fee. It’s rated 4.7 from more than 950 reviews. If you’d rather start from Aci Trezza, our which tour is right for you guide sorts the alternatives.

Questions to Ask the Operator

  1. Where exactly does the boat depart?
  2. Does the route include Aci Trezza and the Faraglioni?
  3. Does it include Aci Castello?
  4. How many passengers can join?
  5. How long is the swimming stop?
  6. Is snorkeling equipment included?
  7. What food and drinks are provided?
  8. Is fuel included on private tours?
  9. What happens if the weather is poor?
  10. What time do we return?

Final Take

Don’t choose a Cyclops Coast cruise on its title or headline price alone. Check the departure point, duration, route, boat, group size, swim stops, snorkeling, food and cancellation terms before you book, and add any boarding fee to the price.
