Cyclops Coast Boat Tours with Swimming
Compare Cyclops Coast boat tours with swimming around Aci Trezza, the Faraglioni and Aci Castello: swim stops, snorkeling, trip length and the best place to start.
If swimming is one of the main reasons you want a boat tour near Catania, the Cyclops Coast is a convenient choice. The boating area around Aci Trezza, the Faraglioni dei Ciclopi and Aci Castello is compact, so you don’t spend half the trip travelling before you can get into the water. Almost every tour here stops for a swim; what varies is how many stops you get and how long you spend in the sea.

Quick Answer
For most visitors, look for a 2- to 3-hour small-group tour from the Aci Trezza or Aci Castello seafront that includes the Faraglioni, at least one dedicated swim stop and an easy way back onto the boat.
If swimming is your main priority, starting in Aci Trezza is more efficient than starting in Catania, because the swim spots are just offshore. If sightseeing matters as much as the swim, a 4-hour cruise from Catania is the better fit.
Why the Cyclops Coast Is Good for Swimming
This is a volcanic coast, not a sandy one. You swim among dark lava rock, offshore sea stacks and columns of basalt, in the clear water of the Isole Ciclopi Marine Protected Area around the Faraglioni and Isola Lachea. With no sand to stir up, the water off the rocks is often very clear. There’s no beach to walk in from, though: you get in and out from the boat.
Swimming Tour or Snorkeling Tour?
A swimming tour usually combines sightseeing with free time in the water, and most hand out masks and snorkels for it. A snorkeling tour gives more attention to the equipment, visibility and the choice of spot. The guided snorkeling tour in the marine reserve, from $55, puts a guide in the water with you; it has one review so far and isn’t open to children under 12. Our Cyclops Coast snorkeling tours page covers the snorkeling options in depth.
How Much Swimming Time Do You Get?
The length of a tour doesn’t tell you. Look at the number of swim stops, and at what else the tour has to fit in, rather than relying on the words “swimming included”.
Some examples from the tours on this site:
| Tour | Length | Swim stops | From |
|---|---|---|---|
| 45-minute boat tour to Aci Castello | 45 min | One, with masks and snorkels | $17 |
| Aci Trezza Odyssey Faraglioni tour | About 1.5 h | One quick stop | $22 |
| Faraglioni boat excursion with snorkeling | 2 h | Several, in coves the skipper picks on the day | $57 |
| 3-hour tour to Acireale | 3 h | Two, including Capomulini Bay | $52 |
| Private boat tour with lunch and swimming in caves | 3 h | Inside the sea caves and below the castle at Aci Castello | around $172 per person |
| Cyclops Coast Cruise with Appetizer & Snorkeling | 4 h | One swim and snorkel stop, with a paddleboard | $75 plus €15 fee |
The 4-hour Catania cruise is the longest of these and still has a single stop, because much of its time goes on the sail up the coast and the aperitif. The 2-hour excursion from Aci Castello has more time in the water for its length than anything else here. It’s rated 5.0 from 31 reviews.
How Long Should You Book?
- 2 hours: best from Aci Trezza or Aci Castello
- 3 hours: the best all-round choice
- 4 hours: best from Catania, or if you want time for swimming and snorkeling as well as a sail
Our boat tour duration guide goes through each length in more detail.
Which Kind of Boat?
Motorboats reach the swim spots quickly, which is why the short Aci Trezza trips and the 2-hour excursions use them. Sailing boats give you a slower day overall: both 4-hour sails from Catania, the appetizer cruise and the Catania sail tour with Sicilian aperitif (from $50, rated 4.7 from more than 950 reviews), include snorkeling gear and a paddleboard. A traditional fishing boat, as on the private tour, can get in close to the caves.
What Makes a Boat Good for Swimming?
Look for a proper ladder, an easy way into the water, shade, space to dry off, and life jackets or other flotation if anyone in your group needs it. The Faraglioni excursion lists life jackets and shaded seating, and the 45-minute tour includes life jackets. Few listings mention a ladder, so ask if it matters to you.
The Odyssey tour isn’t suitable for non-swimmers, and the Catania sail tour isn’t suitable for children under five.
Families, Couples and Groups
Families usually do well with two to three hours and one good swim stop. Couples often enjoy a 4-hour sail with a swim and an aperitif. Groups should compare the private price: the private tour is priced per person, so add it up for everyone before deciding. Our private vs shared guide has the totals.
Morning, Afternoon or Sunset?
Morning is cooler on deck. In the afternoon the sea has had all day to warm. Sunset is better for atmosphere than for a serious swim: the sunset boat tour to Aci Trezza, rated 4.9 from more than 100 reviews, includes a swim, but the light is the point. If time in the water matters most, choose a daytime departure. Our sunset vs daytime guide compares the two.
Best Months
July to September gives you the warmest water, averaging around 25 to 26°C. September is the best balance: the sea is still around 25°C and the August crowds have gone. In June the sea warms from around 23°C through the month, and in May it’s around 19°C, cool enough that most swims are short. See our best time for a Cyclops Coast cruise guide for every month.
What to Bring
Bring swimwear, a towel, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, dry clothes, water and a waterproof phone case. Most tours include the snorkel gear, but check the listing if you’d rather use your own mask.

Final Take
