Which Cyclops Coast Boat Tour Is Right for You?
A quick decision guide to the Cyclops Coast boat tours on this site — by budget, group size, swimming preference and how much time you have.
Every tour here sails past the same Faraglioni, but they’re not interchangeable. These are the questions that actually narrow it down.

If You Only Have an Hour or Two
Book the Aci Trezza boat tour. It leaves right from the Aci Trezza seafront and, depending on the option you pick, runs from 45 minutes to about an hour and a half. You still pass the Faraglioni, Isola Lachea and the Norman castle at Aci Castello, with a swim stop and the Cyclops legend told on board. From around $22, it’s the cheapest way onto the water on this coast.
Not for you if you want food on board or a long, lazy swim.
If You Want the Full Half-Day Experience
Book the Cyclops Coast Cruise with Appetizer & Snorkeling. It’s a four-hour sail from Catania’s old port on a Bavaria 46 or Dufour 41, capped at 12 guests, with a swim and snorkel stop, a paddleboard, and a real Sicilian appetizer of bread, cheese, preserved vegetables and pistachio specialties with sparkling wine. With 946 reviews at 4.7, it’s the most-booked tour on the coast.
Not for you if you’re staying up the coast in Aci Trezza, or you’d rather not pay a €15 boarding fee at the dock on top of the $75 ticket.
If You Want to Sail With a Naturalist Guide
Book the Sail Tour of Cyclops Coast with Sicilian Aperitif. It’s also a four-hour sailboat trip from Catania, but it comes with a naturalist guide who explains the lava formations and the legends as you go, and it’s cheaper at $50. The food is lighter: cheese, tomatoes, cold cuts and pesto on bread, with sparkling wine.
Not for you if you’re travelling with children under five, or need step-free boarding.
If You Want Sunset Light and a Chance of Dolphins
Book the sunset boat tour. It’s two quiet hours in a small group from Aci Castello, timed for the evening light over the coast and Etna. Captain Massimo has a strong reputation for finding dolphins, and at 4.9 from more than 100 reviews it’s the highest-rated reviewed tour on the coast.
Not for you if you want a meal on board. There’s no bar, though guests mention juice, fruit and biscuits being offered.
If You Mainly Want to Swim and Snorkel
You have two good options. The small-group Faraglioni boat excursion has no fixed route: the skipper picks the calmest cove on the day and the pace is slow. The guided snorkeling tour in the Isole Ciclopi Marine Protected Area starts with a briefing by a marine biologist and has a guide in the water with you, with mask and snorkel supplied.
Not for you if you’re a nervous swimmer who wants to stay on the boat. The guided snorkeling tour is also not open to children under 12.
If You Want the Boat to Yourselves
Book a private Cyclops Coast boat tour. You get your own guide on a traditional Aci Trezza fishing boat, swimming inside the sea caves locals call Ulysses’ Sea and beneath the Aci Castello castle, and a Sicilian lunch with dessert and coffee. Pickup from Catania or Taormina is available.
Not for you if budget matters. It’s priced per person, around $172, not as a flat fee for the boat, so it doesn’t get cheaper as your group grows. It’s also not suitable for people prone to seasickness or with heart conditions.
If You Want Something Genuinely Different
Book the fishing-tourism boat day from Catania. You spend five and a half hours on a 20-metre wooden fishing boat, fish with hooks alongside the crew, pass the Faraglioni, stop to swim, and eat seafood prepared on board. It’s rated 5.0 from its guests so far.
Not for you if you’re squeamish about handling fish, or want a short trip.

Four Questions That Settle It
Where are you staying? If it’s Catania, the half-day cruises leave from your doorstep. If it’s Aci Trezza, Aci Castello or anywhere up toward Taormina, the Aci Trezza tours save you a trip into the city. Our Catania vs Aci Trezza guide goes into detail.
Is the swim the point, or the view? For the view and the legend, a short tour does the job. If you want long swims, snorkeling or a paddleboard, choose a tour of two hours or more.
Who’s coming? Young children do best on the shorter trips. Several tours exclude children under five or twelve, and the private charter asks that small children sit on a parent’s lap. Check the “not suitable for” list on each tour page.
What’s your budget, including extras? Add the Catania boarding fees and your transport to the harbour before comparing prices. Our Cyclops Coast cruise prices guide works through real examples.
Can You Do Two?
Yes, and it’s a good plan if you’re spending several days on the coast. A popular pairing is a short Aci Trezza tour on the day you arrive, to get your bearings, then a half-day sail from Catania or a sunset trip later in the week. Because the routes overlap around the Faraglioni, pick two tours that differ in format (morning and sunset, or motorboat and sailboat) rather than two versions of the same trip.
